THE SACRED STORY OF SHRI MOOKAMBIKA DEVI

✦

Once, Goddess Sati, the daughter of Daksha Prajapati and the beloved consort of Lord Shiva, immolated herself in the sacrificial fire insulted by her father.

Overwhelmed with grief, Lord Shiva carried her lifeless body across the universe, performing the Tandava of sorrow.

To restore balance in the world, Lord Vishnu used his Sudarshana Chakra to cut the body of Sati into pieces.

It is believed that the Right Arm of Goddess Sati fell at Kollur, Karnataka. The Goddess defeated the demon Mookasura here, earning the name Mookambika. The idol was consecrated by Adi Shankaracharya himself.
